Orpotyttö Janen lapsuus kuluu sydämettömän tädin hoivissa, joka lähettää hänet 10-vuotiaana sisäoppilaitokseen. Koulussa vallitsee raaka kuri, ja tyttö joutuu näkemään nälkää ja kärsii kylmyydestä. 18-vuotiaana Jane palkataan Thornfield Halliin, eläväisen ranskalaisen tytön, Adèlen, kotiopettajattareksi. Tytön suojatti, Mr Rochester on pidättyväinen, mutta komea mies. Jane huomaa rakastuvansa tähän synkkämieliseen Thornfieldin Hallin isäntään, ja hiljalleen myös miehen tunteet heräävät. Mutta ennen kuin he voivat elää onnellisina yhdessä miehenä ja vaimona, heidän täytyy päästä eroon miehen menneisyyden haamuista. (SF Film Fin.)

Jane Eyre's ill-fated love has two trump cards. Toby Stephens and little Georgia Henley as little Jane. After all, this was the only time Henley could capitalize on her experience in the Narnia cycle, and it's a huge shame because she was adorable as a kid. Stephens, on the other hand, has already proven several times that classic adaptions suit him better than, for example, an anniversary Bond film. Onegin, Gatsby, Napoleon, Poirot, and Marple all offered him the ideal space for dramatic acting. So it's no surprise that even as a Rochester he can be very tasty. On the other hand, I find no other positives; this BBC dramatization is unimaginative, minimally engaging and Ruth Wilson in the lead role is barely adequate. I'll probably have to keep looking because I’ve only been able to accept Zeffirelli so far.
