I really didn't expect a simple BBC adaptation to rehabilitate my negative experience of The Handmaiden so much. This is because this Fingersmith is also a rewrite of the same novel by Sarah Waters "Fingersmith" (2002). I suppose it was really important to return the story to the setting and time period that Waters had determined. Cultural transpositions are not always the ideal solution. You can never have too many good period lesbian dramas.
