englanti I didn’t really care much for the romance storyline in this movie, even though Catherine Deneuve and Vincent Perez do deliver beautiful performances. Anyhow, I’m giving this four stars, above all, for the idea of creating such a romantic triangle in a setting such as Indochina in the 1950s. The director did an absolutely epic take on this and presents us with the most beautiful corners of Vietnam that one can only dream of. Actually, it’s something like a travelogue disguised as a movie, the 152 minutes of which fly by before you know it. ()

englanti According to the opinion of many film fans, this is one of the most important French films of the 90s and an exceptionally powerful film, but I am such a querulant that I often disagree with the majority's opinion. In my opinion, it is an inflated dime-store story that plagiarizes dramatic historical events in French colonies of the 30s and 40s. It could be said that it has top-notch camera work, but it gives the impression of a 2.5-hour grand advertisement for laundry detergent, because in this film, white is even whiter, and no one gets dirty, sweats, or wrinkles. It captures beautiful people in pathetically emotionally tense situations, but unlike someone like Spielberg, who squeezes out emotions whenever possible, Wargnier is a terrible storyteller. The first half dragged on like a snail with an amputated leg, and the second was only slightly better. Overall, watching this opus was a cinematic cleanser for me, which I would like to forget, despite the presence of several great French film stars. Overall impression for the beautifully arranged pictures: 20%. ()

englanti This French attempt at a big-budget, visually lavish tragic romance worked out less than halfway. Apart from the natural beauty and the exquisite shots, costumes and sets, this film has absolutely nothing to offer in terms of content. It tries to be far more romantic than spare and historically accurate. Unfortunately, instead of a gripping story, what we get is a cheesy and pathetic love tangle sucked out of thin air. The French and their perception of emotion is a bit out of place, or maybe it's because the film's rhetoric has become so dated over time – both are a nuisance. The similarly structured The English Patient is somewhere else. ()
