Le Doux Pays de mon enfance

Comedy is the last thing that would occur to me as a genre designation for this television film. It is an intimate drama that dissects the burning issue of immigration, national identity, and the integration of newcomers into Western European countries. It is about what a person has to do and sacrifice to be considered a full-fledged citizen of the country where they have lived most of their life and where they feel at home. It is thematically very strong, but unfortunately somewhat diluted, melodramatic, and weakened in its message by the final happy ending. Overall impression: 55%. (07.11.2009)
