Survive Style 5+

I might be dreaming, but it seems that I’m finally acquiring a taste for Asian cinema. I haven’t laughed so much in a long time. Excellent jokes, incredibly crazy situations and twists, everything done ad absurdum… And the ads! I loved them even more than the woman who came up with them. I can wholeheartedly recommend this film to anyone with a feeling for not fully ordinary humour (or any type of humour that is not fully ordinary). (07.07.2009)

A majorly original picture with incredibly peculiar humor that contains a dash of every imaginable kind of humor that exists and some that doesn’t exist. All the other aspects of the movie are highly unusual, original and absolutely disarming. The wonderful directing from Gen Sekiguchi, wrapped in magically “kitsch" stylization of scenery and costumes is augmented by brilliant use of music. An enormous number of characters appear here, but not one of them seems to be there just for their pretty face. Each of them has their function in life. The only negative in this movie, which otherwise leaves a hugely positive feeling inside you, might in theory be its unorthodoxy, otherness and strangeness. (05.05.2005)
