Juonikuvaukset(1)

The Mantle brothers, Beverly and Elliot, are brilliant gynecologists with an upscale Toronto practice. Elliot is charismatic and outgoing, Beverly is shy and hard-working; emotionally inseparable, the brothers function like psychological Siamese twins. They share everything, including women, until Beverly - the weaker of the two - falls in love with a neurotic, drug addicted, actress. Forced to separate from his brother for the first time, Beverly becomes hooked on drugs and suffers a complete mental breakdown. Elliot, unable to exist independently of his twin, soon joins Beverly in a nightmarish descent into madness and self-destruction. Irons plays the brothers, whose award winning research in gynecology has brought them international acclaim. (20th Century Fox)

englanti Cronenberg is a master of the dark corners of our mind, he navigates them like few others and proves to us how skillfully he handles his favorite subject over the years. In each of his films, we witness what is dark in human beings, yet every film is different, new, and unique. When I wrote this review, I hadn't seen the film A Dangerous Method yet, but it was one of the highly anticipated films for me. ()

englanti An extremely strong shot of espresso brewed by Cronenberg, without a grain of sugar or a drop of cream. The level of filmmaking reaches surgical precision. But the meaning of the film remains impenetrable upon first viewing. I need to come back to this later. ()

englanti A very bold and original affair. A film so intricate and complex in its essence that it would make for several stacks of studies from different fields. Psychologically very sophisticated, yet emotionally a bit austere (except for the ending, which is really strong and excellent). And Jeremy Irons gives a truly incredible performance(s). ()

englanti Cold and detached, but captivating in a weird fashion. Cronenberg portrays perversion again with this psychological/psychopathic drama, but this time we see (almost) nothing. The perversion is just hanging everywhere in the air. Irons delivers a brilliant double performance in a very weird and unpleasant film. ()
