The tale begins when Barbie, playing the role of Clara, receives a beautiful wooden Nutcracker as a gift from her favorite aunt. That night, while Clara sleeps, the Nutcracker springs to life to ward off the evil Mouse King who has invaded Clara's parlor. She awakes and aids the Nutcracker, but the Mouse King shrinks her by casting an evil spell. Clara and the Nutcracker set off on a spectacular adventure to find the Sugarplum Princess, the only one who can break the Mouse King's evil enhancement. Fortunately, the modern history of Barbie films goes back beyond the first attempts of the 1980s and 1990s and begins with this magical variation on P.I. Tchaikovsky's classic ballet "The Nutcracker" based on "The Nutcracker and The Mouse King" by E. T.A. Hoffmann. It has an interesting framework narrative with lessons to be learned, and it is also of course the ideal first step to building an empire with the film face of the Barbie doll. Here she acts as Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy Princess, and as herself. She tells the entire story to her little sister Shelley, and thanks to their ballet lesson, there’s now an opportunity for a full Christmas story. Personally, I was hesitant after my first viewing of it, but with my gradual knowledge of all the films, I can’t help but rate it as excellent. The most magical of experiences are brought to you by classical music with NY Ballet's prima ballerina Maria Kowroski.
