Near the end of their five-year mission through space in search of alien life, the crew of the Palomino comes upon the largest black hole ever discovered, with the long-missing starship Cygnus at its edge. I am quite hesitant regarding this science fiction movie. It is a breathtaking and star-studded extravaganza, which can amaze the audience especially with its great special effects and the majestic music composed by John Barry. It borrows a lot from 2001: A Space Odyssey (some sequences of visual effects, the entire finále) and Star Wars (the awkward talking robots), which could still be overlooked. However, at times it slides into such idiotic realms (both in terms of the story and going against the laws of physics) that it takes your breath away. In fact, the finále of this movie is such an amazingly over-the-top phantasmagoria that it is incredibly entertaining. If I saw this hit of a movie as a little boy, I would love it today! In the end, however, I am still left with very strange mixed feelings, however, I did have a great time watching it, regardless. For some people, this must be a stone-cold guilty pleasure!
