Enter Professor Zelen, an expert on vampires who's sent in to prevent her death. At the same time, secrets are revealed surrounding the circumstances of Sir Karell's death. Count Drac... um, Count Mora is tyrannizing Transyl... um, Bohemia, inhabited by gyps... um, the Romani people and Sherlo... um, the genius Detective Neumann from Prague is hot on his heels. Plus it has a considerable portion of rusty Czech (hilarious fun for us Czechs to listen to!). But if I ignore this unintentionally amusing aspect, this is basically an absolutely average genre piece of its day that doesn’t even surprise with the twist at the end. It would have been more interesting if they had used the originally considered ending with a more emotive twist.

This is mostly a kind of prank where Tod Browning somewhat feeds on his successful Dracula, also starring Bela Lugosi. But it’s totally fine. As such, Mark of the Vampire is an exciting and interesting picture that stands on its own feet – nothing is how it looks at first sight.
