Carthage, Third century B.C., during the second Punic War. Young Cabiria is about to be sacrificed to the god Moloch, but is saved by the Roman Fulvio Axilla and his faithful servant Maciste. Many years later, the two recognise her as the beautiful Elissa, Sofonisba’s (the king of Carthage’s daughter) favourite and entrapped by the high priest Kharthalo. The final defeat of Carthage by the Romans crowns the birth of love between Axilla and Cabiria. (Cannes Film Festival)

englanti This is a key film for the future development of historical spectacles in Europe and America. While domestically Maciste in particular survived as the protagonist of a whole series of his own films, Hollywood went its own way. Thanks to the Kino edition, it is now possible to see Cabiria as a truly modern film with an opulent and interesting production design, good acting performances, and an appealing plot despite a gap of almost a century. In addition, Francesca Bertini is a sexy girl and it is a pleasure to go through her storyline with her. She was petting cheetahs like nobody's business. ()
