Had this film not been so dumb, it might have been watchable. It wasn’t filmed in a bad manner. But it’s dragged down by the convoluted plot twists, where we’ll see Denzel raiding a hospital after the first half hour of the film, because he is desperate, waving a gun in his hand like some wannabe boss. ()
John Q. is a simple, formulaic Hollywood flick about a father who is willing to do whatever it takes to get his son on the list of organ-donation recipients. It’s an overwrought sentimental fable that tries to move you with an ocean of moralistic, good-hearted ideas and fails miserably when it comes to intellect. And I won’t even comment on its disgusting rip-off of Gavras’s Mad City. ()
I will not argue about the reality and excessive "Americanism" of this work. I perceive it primarily as an indictment of the American healthcare system. When an ordinary person doesn't have money, they will just let him die on the steps in front of the hospital. And our esteemed Minister of Health has taken this system as a model. This film impressed me, Denzel Washington is a great actor, I have never seen him act badly yet, the others are also convincing - Anne Heche, James Woods, Robert Duvall and Ray Liotta. Excellent choice for a rainy Friday evening. ()
Full of pathos and sentimentality. There are a few interesting scenes, but otherwise a lackluster contribution. ()
Denzel in a perfect role as a father who will do anything for his son... I believed him every second so it really grabbed me by the heart. Sufficiently dramatic, emotional, sentimental... excellent. ()
