Koe kaksi aikamme suurinta näyttelijää ensimmäistä kertaa neljänkymmenen vuoden jälkeen yhdessä kaikkien aikojen arvostetuimmista elokuvista. Peter O'Toole tekee mestarillisen roolisuorituksen kuningas Henrik II:na, Englannin hallitsijana, joka pitää tärkeimpänä neuvonantajanaan ja uskottuna miehenään ystäväänsä Thomas Becketiä (Richard Burton uransa avainroolissa) luokkarajoista piittaatta. Kun kuningas ajautuu ongelmiin kirkon kanssa, hän päättää ratkaista konfliktin nimittämällä Becketin Canterburyn arkkipiispaksi.
