Rose was a child when her mother died, and the family had an explanation ready for her: suicide. Except the fragments of memory that come to the young woman as she is growing up in the care of her grandmother and despotic uncle in a remote part of Calabria suggest something else. In her desire to understand the past and the family dynamic, Rosa uncovers the laws of the mafia world, in which she had only been a passive element until now. The need for defiance increasingly smoulders within her. Screened at Berlin, this evocative drama with its feminist subtext relies on expressive performances, sombre visuals and genre interplay. Director Francesco Costabile was inspired by the true stories of women who stood up to the ‘Ndrangheta, the most powerful organised crime syndicate in Italy. englanti The Code of Silence is a tedious, monotonous, repetitive sequence of scenes where the characters throw serious faces at each other to make the viewer understand that they are having a hard time in life. For the whole first hour of the stagnant plot you are practically just waiting for the main character to internally realize a fact that you, as the audience, know from the very first scene, only to then practically start the plot of what could have been quite an interesting revenge movie. But even then, it doesn't go anywhere, you just get a symbolically literal scene at the end with a stare into the camera, so that this time, as a stupid spectator, you will finally understand that the characters really have it hard in life.
