Kokonaan digitaalisesti toteutetussa tietokoneanimaatiossa eletään vuotta 2065. Avaruudesta syöksyneen meteorin mukana tulleet aaveet ovat tuhonneet suurimman osan ihmiskunnasta, jonka rippeet asuvat maata kiertävillä avaruusasemilla. Salaperäisiä unia näkevä tri Aki Ross uskoo voivansa pelastaa ihmiskunnan, jos hän pystyy löytämään maapallon harvoissa elollisissa olennoissa piilevät kahdeksan henkeä.Ihmiskunnansotilasjohto ei kuitenkaan luota Akin ja hänen kollegansa tri Sidin henkien mahdista, vaan suunittelee masiivista iskua aaveiden pesäpaikkanaan pitämään kraateriin. Aki ja Sid pelkäävät, että iskun vaikutuksesta aaveet tuhoavat maapallon elämää ylläpitävän Gaian, mutta kukaan ei usko heidän varoituksiaan. (Nordisk Film Fin.)
