An Oscar-winning look at the Nazi Klaus Barbie, who after 1945 was in the service of Western intelligence agencies. Ophuls proved to be an excellent interviewer. The film's many different voices range from dictators to Nazi hunters, and combine to form a call for justice and an ironic look at the human comedy. I can't help but feel that this movie is just drawn out, and mainly about trying to blame other people for helping a man who committed atrocities to hide. It was almost as if Ophüls was searching for an answer as to why they were helping such a monster. It might be better to answer why there was such a monster in the first place. But that's not a very nice answer.
