Biografia

Javor Gardev was born in 1972 in Sofia. He is a graduate of the National Lyceum for Ancient Languages and Cultures in Sofia and holds a degree in Philosphy from Sofia University and in Drama Theatre Directing from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts. Next came postgraduate courses in the area of directing, stage arts and cultural policies in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the United States.

Javor Gardev has made over twenty-three plays as a director part of which are co-produced and played in theatres and at festivals in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Turkey, Russia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo. The more popular ones are Jean Gene's The Maids; Olya Mouchina's Tanya-Tanya; Heiner Müller's Quartet; Bastard after Shakespeare and Durenmatt; Peter Weiss's Marat/Sade; Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman; Edward Albee's The Play about the Baby; William Shakespear's The Tempest and King Lear; Hanoch Levin's Krum and The Old Woman from Calcutta and Ivan Vyrypaev's Valentine's Day.

His projects often combine theatrical expression means with these of modern visual art, performance and experimental audio forms. He is in the possession of numerous national and international distinctions and awards for his theatrical work and interdisciplinary projects. In addition to his theatrical plays, radio plays, visual performances and conceptual actions Javor Gardev has also made short films: Der Solitudebolero oder Raskolnikowbesessenheit in 1998 in Stuttgart, Germany; Bedspotting in 2000 in Tours, France and Oh Sweet Home of Mine / Discovery Channel Redone in 2002 in Shabla, Bulgaria. Javor Gardev's début in full-length feature filmmaking was the film Zift.
