Founder and director for over 20 years of the News program ICAIC Latinoamericano, his work stood out for the active presence of journalism, the reflection of key historical events such as the Vietnam war and the mercenary invasion to Cuba in 1961, the brilliant use of the montage and the soundtrack use as part of an indissoluble dramatic action. His documentary Now (1965), is considered by the specialists as the predecessor of the current videoclip. He was appointed Member of the German Democratic Republic Academy of Arts and ongoing teacher of the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños. He was Cuba’s Minister of Culture’s advisor, president of the National Federation of Film Clubs and until 1986, he was a member of the National Popular Assembly. He obtained the titles of: Gran Brujo de los Andes and Cronista del Tercer Mundo. The five documentaries that will be presented in this edition of the International Film Festival in Guadalajara in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Santiago Álvarez, are representative jewels of his incomparable talent.
