TY, JENŽ JSI UBLÍŽIL
Ty jenž jsi ublížil prostému člověku
a jeho křivdě dovedl ses smát
i hordu tatrmanů najímat
k matení pojmů o dobru a zlu,
i kdyby se ti všichni kořili,
tvou ctnost a moudrost sborem chválíce,
tvůj obraz v zlato ryli na mince,
šťastni, že další den zas přežili,
nebuď si jist. Básník to ví a zná.
Můžeš ho zabít - narodí se jiný,
sepsány budou slova tvá i činy.
provaz a větev tíhou sehnutá.
(Washington D. C. 1950)
(př. Vlasta Dvořáčková)
Który skrzywdziłeś
Który skrzywdziłeś człowieka prostego
śmiechem nad krzywdą jego wybuchając,
gromadę błaznów koło siebie mając
na pomieszanie dobrego i złego,
choćby przed tobą wszyscy się skłonili
cnotę i mądrość tobie przypisując,
złote medale na twoją cześć kując,
radzi że jeszcze jeden dzień przeżyli,
nie bądź bezpieczny. Poeta pamięta.
Możesz go zabić - narodzi się nowy,
spisane będą czyny i rozmowy.
Lepszy dla ciebie byłby świt zimowy
i sznur i gałąź pod ciężarem zgięta.
You Who Wronged
You who wronged a simple man
bursting into laughter at the crime,
and kept a pack of fools around you
to mix good and evil, to blur the line,
though everyone bowed down before you,
saying virtue and wisdom lit your way,
striking gold medals in your honor,
glad to have survived another day,
do not feel safe. The poet remembers.
You can kill one, but another is born,
the words are written down, the deed, the date.
And you'd have done better with a winter dawn,
A rope, and a branch bowed beneath your weight.

Remembering
Remembering, remembering is like dying a little bit
now you know it
because everything comes around even if you don't want to
and forgetting,
and forgetting is harder
now you know it is harder
if you want to start over
remembering, remembering, like a dive into the sea
remembering, remembering what must be erased
and forgetting, and forgetting, is how you lose dear things
and [by] forgetting, and [by] forgetting, rare joys will end
and forgetting, and forgetting, is how you lose dear things
Ricordare
Ricordare, ricordare è come un po' morire
tu adesso lo sai
perché tutto ritorna anche se non vuoi
e scordare,
e scordare, e scordare, finiranno gioie rare
e scordare, e scordare, è che perdi cose care

Mirror
I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful -
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.
Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

Uphill
Does the road wind up-hill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day's journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend.
But is there for the night a resting-place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that inn.
Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I knock, or call when just in sight?
They will not keep you standing at the door.
Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak?
Of labor you shall find the sum.
Will there be beds for me and all who seek?
Yea, beds for all who come.
(Christina Georgina Rossetti)
Todesfuge
dein goldenes Haar Margarete
dein aschenes Haar Sulamith

Fuga smrti
Černé mléko rána my pijem tě večer
pijem tě v poledne pijem tě ráno a pijem tě v noci
pijem i pijem
kopeme v oblacích hrob tam nikdy nebývá těsno
Muž bydlí v domě a hraje si s hady a píše
píše když venku se stmívá a do Němec píše Markétko zlaté máš vlasy
napíše a vyjde před dům kde lesknou se hvězdy a zahvízdá na svoje psice
Zahvízdá na svoje Židy a káže nám kopat hrob
káže nám hrajte teď k tanci
Černé mléko rána my pijem tě v noci
pijem tě ráno a v poledne pijem tě večer
pijem a pijem
Muž bydlí v domě a hraje si s hady a píše
Černé mléko rána my pijem tě v noci
pijem tě ráno a v poledne pijem tě večer
pijem a pijem
muž bydlí v domě a Markétko zlaté máš vlasy
Černé mléko rána my pijem tě v noci
pijem tě v poledne a smrt je z Německa mistr
pijem tě večer a pijem tě ráno a pijem a pijem
smrt ta je z Německa mistr a modré má oči
stihne tě z olova kulkou a stihne tě přesně
muž bydlí v domě a Markétko zlaté máš vlasy

The Tyger
Tygr
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright Tygře, tygře, žhavě žhneš
In the forests of the night, v noci, jíž jak lesem jdeš!
What immortal hand or eye Kdo vzal smrti její moc
Could frame thy fearful symmetry? a dal ti strašnou souměrnost?
In what distant deeps or skies V hloubi kde, kde v nebesích
Burnt the fire of thine eyes? planul oheň očí tvých?
On what wings dare he aspire? Na čích perutích se vznese?
What the hand dare sieze the fire? Která ruka plamen snese ?
And what shoulder and what art Který fortel, které ruce
Could twist the sinews of thy heart? utkaly tkáň tvého srdce?
And when thy heart began to beat, Kdo, když srdce začlo bít,
What dread hand and what dread feet? strašný spár moh vytvořit?
What the hammer? What the chain? Kdo dal řetěz? Kdo jej kul?
In what furnace was thy brain? V které výhni mozek žhnul?
What the anvil? What dread grasp Která kovadlina, hmat
Dare its deadly terrors clasp? smí tu hrůzu do ruk brát?
When the stars threw down their spears, Když pak hvězdy vrhly kopí,
And watered heaven with their tears, jejich slzy nebe kropí,
Did he smile his work to see? moh se, kdo tě stvořil, smát?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee? Beránka moh udělat?
Tyger! Tyger! burning bright Tygře, tygře, žhavě žhneš
In the forests of the night, v noci, jíž jak lesem jdeš!
What immortal hand or eye Kdo kdy smrti vezme moc
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? a dá ti strašnou souměrnost?
(William Blake) (Zdeněk Hron)
Do not go gentle into that good night
Do not go gentle into that good night, Pokojně nevcházej do dobré tmy,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day, stáří má vzplát, když se mu den sklání,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. běsni a zuř, když se tvé světlo tmí.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Moudrý, že tma je v konci dobrá, ví,
Because their words had forked no lightning they když z jeho slov už nehřmí na blýskání,
Do not go gentle into that good night. pokojně nevchází do dobré tmy.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Dobrý, vlnou smeten, zas křičet smí,
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay že jeho činy mohly tančit strání,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. běsní a zuří, když se světlo tmí.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, Rváč, který slunce lapil zpěvem svým,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, lká, že zabránil mu v putování,
Do not go gentle into that good night. pokojně nevchází do dobré tmy.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Vážný vidí smrt zrakem slepnoucím,
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, jak meteor hořel by ve vlání,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. běsní a zuří, když se světlo tmí.
And you, my father, there on the sad height, Ty, otče, tam, obklopen žalostmi,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. trestej a žehnej mne svým proklínáním.
Do not go gentle into that good night. Pokojně nevcházej do dobré tmy.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Běsni a zuř, když se tvé světlo tmí.
