Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016)

englanti Actually, I don’t know what else I was expecting. It was late at night, the twenty-first of May, and I didn’t want to go to sleep, and this was the only alternative which could possibly keep me awake. Well… For today’s kids, it will probably be an action ride, but I was done with that endless digital. They could have made the film like a cartoon and it would not harm it at all. An exemplary case of how I liked the old cartoon Ninja Turtles but can’t stand the today’s versions. The older I get, the more I feel that new remakes of old fairy tales are getting on my nerves more and more. And I have to add that Megan Fox didn’t save this film at all!

By Way of Helena (2016)

englanti A lot of western movies have emerged in America lately. They probably feel that it is time to go back to this genre, so they found a couple of screenwriters who embarked on the revival. From the beginning, The Duel allures you by the historical locations, just so it can then bore you to death with the plot of the movie, where nothing interesting happens at all. Woody Harrelson plays a very interesting character, but what’s the use of it when he plays it in a film that is shot in such an uninteresting way. He cannot save the film either and then all that is left for me is to leave it with the average three star, which is saved a bit at least by the ending.

A Street Cat Named Bob (2016)

englanti If you love cats, I highly doubt that you will give this film less than the full five stars.A beautiful, deeply felt movie of how a man is saved by his animal friend can’t be bad.I watched it with interest for the whole 103 minutes and I wondered that the paths of life are really unpredictable, and anything can happen in the world.I felt good. The director worked really hard to make Bob an acting celebrity.Even though the cat is identical to the hero of the story. And when you add in the pleasant music, you are gonna wish that this story never ends. After watching it I did some googling and I have to say this film is an exemplary case of how glad I am that films exist, as they have an obvious beginning and end.The reality can be much sadder… and more real. But that is not what this film is about so I can really recommend it to you.I haven’t seen a nicer deeper story than this one in a long time.

Trhák (1980)

englanti This is definitely the weirdest film ever to be produced by Svěrák and Smoljak. The very fact that in 1980, they managed to lure in so many personalities of the film and music industry of those times in connection with music that has since become legendary proves that even the weirdest film by this creative duo is still great fun that will have you laughing from from beginning to end.

Les Charlots contre Dracula (1980)

englanti I watched the first part of Les Charlots this weekend while cleaning and I said to myself that I haven’t seen this one where they are about to fight Dracula. So, I tuned in only to find out that I was no longer surprised why I hadn’t seen this one. The repeated jokes in this case come across as pretty forced. And the fact that characters that you are familiar with are dubbed by different voice actors doesn’t help things, either. I’m not laughing, it’s not funny – I am actually sorry about what happened to Les Charlots afterwards and how crucial the director was for them.

Je ne suis pas un salaud (2015)

englanti Eddie isn’t the simplest of characters and Nicolas Duvauchelle did a terrific job portraying him. He’s not too smart and on top of that he doesn’t have a lot of money. So, when he gets beaten up by immigrants and one them stabs him with a screwdriver, it doesn’t occur to him that if he accuses one of them of the attack things can quickly turn against him. This heavy, psychological movie that is excellently made shows what can happen if a Muslim or another brown-skinned person beats you up and you almost die. Once again, a strongly anti-immigrant movie, which at the same time tries to be objective and not to show only one side of the issue. The French are good at this and I am not surprised at all that so many similar movies are made in their country. A very solid effort by the French, not only with a very psychological plot, but mainly with a brutal ending. And the French are masters at that.

Lukas and the Aspies (2015)

englanti A good short film at least has a good punchline. I was looking forward to something similar here and if there wasn’t a punchline I was at least hoping that the film would shed some light on Asperger syndrome itself. So even if there is no point, the premise of this flick is very interesting. But the only thing that I learnt from the movie was that the popular name for these people is the same word we use in Czech to describe ham in jelly – “aspik”.

Triple 9 (2016)

englanti If I leave aside the fact that this film offers rather solid action scenes, I wouldn’t know what else I should talk about in this case. Triple 9 had a great cast of actors and it didn’t manage to work with them well enough for me to get used to any single one of them at least for a while. Instead, the movie focuses on a band of nasty Hispanic guys who make life miserable both for the group of familiar actors and for ourselves. And that’s a world I don’t need to see.

Shelley (2016)

englanti I haven’t been disappointed with a Nordic movie for a long time. That is until I saw Shelley, a copy of Rosemary’s Baby, which capitalizes on the only interesting aspect of the movie – the environment of a secluded house in Denmark with a nice lake next to it as a bonus. Nothing happened in the movie for the entire hour and a half. There are people here who speak of an atmosphere, but that atmosphere would have to be atmospheric in any way for it to work at all. This one had nothing worth your interest and the only moment that was at least a bit interesting was the ending. But the director would have managed to shoot such a punchline even within a short movie within no more than five minutes and he wouldn’t have had to ruin our lives with it.

Dog Eat Dog (2016)

englanti Willem Dafoe makes quite an entrance. In the very first scene, shot completely in pink, he shows us just what a huge psychopath, drugged with meth and coca, he can be. He then meets your standard psychologist Nicolas Cage, who for a change is the most intelligent guy here. And the third member of the gang is an actor, who is at the same time the director of this film. Well and I must admit that I was glad to see his face on the screen. At least I know who I should yell at for the hour and a half of this weird and sometimes even “WTF” bullshit of a movie that he decided to make. Dog Eat Dog is a downright unpleasant movie that is at the same time “full” of black humor that will keep you incredibly “entertained” until the very end. The biggest lure of this film was Nicolas even though Willem is the biggest psychopath in the film. That alone shows you that there is something off with this film.
