Fortysomething (2003) (sarja)

englanti A series that doesn't rely on avalanches of jokes and continuous volleys of laughter, but tries to be as believable and human as possible. Hugh Laurie's confused hero has to win everyone over, but Anna Chancellor, their three serial children and, of course, the winking and never-failing Stephen Fry are also very entertaining. I also give four and a half stars for the approach of the authors and the reasonable number of episodes - six hour-long episodes are just enough to keep the ideas fresh and not threaten their repetition.

La Horse (1970)

englanti Excellent! Master Gabin is once again in remarkable form and we have no choice but to admire his acting. A simple farmer with a sense of justice would prefer to solve problems amicably, or with a more forceful agreement spiced with a lesson and ending with a manly handshake. It's just that if you can't... Well... Even simple farmers have a rifle hidden somewhere. Horse is a quiet, yet haunting film that could not have been made anywhere else but France. Some scenes (the cattle massacre, the finale) I will never forget. As with the moodily similar Delon's The Burned Barns - four and a half stars.

Nopeat ja kuolleet (1995)

englanti The Quick and the Dead is a western I always like to watch. Sam Raimi's love of the genre, resurrected three years earlier by Eastwood's (unrivalled and unbeatable) Unforgiven, is evident in every minute. Raimi quotes famous movies, he's not afraid to even steal from one of the most famous (yes, Once Upon a Time in the West), he does what he wants, he does it in a fun way, and he does it alongside a plethora of top-notch actors. Clearly the best of them are Gene Hackman, Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. Sharon Stone is interesting as a heroine, but she fails to stand out among the others (or at least keep up with them). Praise must go to Silvestri's "Morricone" music and the great cinematography. Four-star entertainment.

Robin Hood - varkaiden ruhtinas (1991)

englanti I watched Costner's Robin Hood years later, with gusto, and I went straight to the extended version. Satisfaction? Absolute. It is exactly the kind of (by the standards of the time) big film for the whole family, from which everyone can choose "something". I won't be saying anything new if I praise especially Alan Rickman, whose sheriff is one of the funniest villains in movie history (cries like "And call off Christmas!" say it all). But it would be a shame to forget the sensational performances of Kevin C. and Morgan F., their jokes (the binoculars, "Azeem! It's time to redeem that vow!") and overall likability in general. True, the casting guys could have chosen a slightly prettier actress for Marian, but let's be glad at least that the lady is not a naive, silly ninny like in other versions of the Sherwood legend. Michael Kamen should also be praised for his pleasant music with an addictive theme (Bryan Adams be damned, though) and Kevin Reynolds, who should probably film something again soon. Five stars.

Killers (2010)

englanti It happens occasionally that I get to a film via its soundtrack. For example, I discovered Killers through the brisk music of one of my favorite contemporary composers, Rolfe Kent. And I'm glad it helped me find this film. Especially in comparison to the debacle Knight and Day, this film feels like a fresh and perhaps original spectacle full of gentle humor and a relaxed atmosphere. Ashton Kutcher (how is that possible??) was not the least bit unsympathetic and he and Katherine Heigl made an interesting couple, but the crown of the cast was put on by the excellent daddy Tom Selleck. Don't be discouraged, endure the first more or less conversational half hour, and I think you'll be entertained by Killers. From the car chase scene to the reactivation of agents of all kinds to the funny ending, I round up a decent three and a half - purely in reference to Tom and Cameron, who lacked everything that can be found in this film.

Ulovit miliardáře (2009) BOO!

englanti Everything, and I mean everything is bad about this film. I wasn't expecting to, but after watching Catch the Billionaire, I'm giving it a Boo! The actors, non-actors, and actor-non-actors, along with the director and screenwriter (if there is one), should first be ashamed and then roast in hell. They put together a lousy film that I really couldn't find anything to improve it, although I tried (at first) to do so. Yuck.

Showtime (2002)

englanti A cool comedy. Robert De Niro looks like he's playing an older character from Midnight Run by a few years, and he's really funny with his dullness. Eddie Murphy is... Eddie Murphy, Rene Russo looks as pretty as ever, William Shatner slides down the hood... Yes, it's an average comedy. But that doesn't mean I can't laugh from beginning to end.

Sidottu (2005)

englanti The Jacket has an interesting idea, it attracts the names of good actors and sort of promises an experience from that "higher film league". I give it three slightly above average stars, mostly for the acting. Brody was probably born for such roles, Keira Knightley and Kris Kristofferson are also very convincing, but all of them (in my opinion) were overshadowed by Daniel Craig. In a relatively small space, he showed what is called a perfect transformation, he is almost unrecognizable (not only thanks to his black hair) and he visibly enjoys the role. As far as the story is concerned, this is where The Jacket disappointed me. It lacked any twists that would have made it more interesting, it was hardly dramatic except for a few scenes, and it didn't surprise me with anything. That’s too bad, because it looked more promising. This is how you actually find out from the main character in the middle of the film how it all turns out... And then you're just waiting to find out he was right.

Wiedźmin (2001)

englanti Compared to the series, one star down, for the editing, the shortening and thus the confusing the plot. However, I commend the distributors for at least releasing a DVD of the film, if nothing else.

Les Granges Brulées (1973)

englanti A great film with an unbelievably real Delon, a (literally) chilling atmosphere, and an unease that grabs you at the beginning of The Burnt Barns and doesn't let go. One of the best French crime thrillers and one of Delon's best films__P.S. When I saw the very first long shot of a snowmobile making its way through the snowdrifts, only one thing came to my mind: Fargo. What do you say, dear Coens?
