Mutaa kuonoon! sano virtahepo (1979)

englanti I really liked this crazy duo back in the day - when I was around 9-10 years old. Their movies perfectly corresponded to my mental development and idea of entertainment. Therefore, I evaluate their films with a great deal of leniency, although from an adult's perspective, it is somewhat one-dimensional and very simple filmmaking. I didn't see the Hippopotamus in Africa back then, so there is a bit less nostalgia, and the uniformity of gags, lack of story, and overall infantility stand out even more. Nevertheless, it is still Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, so they earn two stars and contribute to 35% of the overall impression.

Ztracenci (1956)

englanti For me, this is the best-filmed adaptation of Alois Jirásek's work, supported by excellent performances from all involved, meticulous direction, and an emotional screenplay. In several moments - especially in the final scene, when Gustáv Valach walks toward enemy soldiers - the film lightly slides into pathos, causing it to miss out on a fifth star, but it is still a great piece of work, even on an international scale, for its time. Strong dialogues and an atmosphere of despair during wartime turmoil. Overall impression: 85%.

Persepolis (2007)

englanti I had the opportunity to see Persepolis shortly after the start of a film festival, and it became clear to me right away that I was watching the winning film of the 2008 edition. This exceptionally emotive work, based on the internationally renowned graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi, captivated me with its atmosphere, visual style, and the fact that it stands out very distinctly from the vast majority of contemporary commercial animated productions. It is simply in a completely different league. A film that is worlds apart from the mainstream. It doesn't give the viewer anything for free and is not a typical family spectacle. It is a work from the realm of art for a mature audience and one of the absolute peaks of animated production. Overall impression: 100%. I consider it a very successful development of the comic, visually richer and enriched with a typically cinematic dimension. The serious theme is presented in a light-hearted way, with some small jokes and gags (a punk slogan on a jacket, buying records on the black market, dealing with a partner's infidelity). A humorous idyll quickly turns into a minefield through which fanatically indoctrinated children run in search of happiness in the promised paradise... A film about coming of age in a complex political situation in a country that is not free, where a series of banal situations can turn into cruel drama; about the clash of cultures and value systems, about the search for one's own identity, love, and security. It is good to watch the film with a certain understanding of Iranian history, but even without it, it is a great ride. The colors in the film are also guided by the mood of the protagonist - for the most part, it is made in black and white.

U mě dobrý (2008)

englanti I did not go to the movie theater with high expectations, as Czech films have not been doing well lately. I was pleasantly surprised by this decent, well-executed genre comedy with an exceptional cast. It is certainly not a great film, but compared to Jan Hřebejk's previous two (in my view, very weak) films, it is a significant step forward. The film somewhat resembles Machulski's Vabank and Ocean's Eleven. Of course, it is a cheaper Czech version that has some flaws, the level of dialogue fluctuates, some scenes are not adequately executed - for example, the absurd scene of selling cosmetics in a pub ends with a rather awkward vulgarity, some of the supporting characters are only superficially outlined, and Hřebejk did not avoid his usual sweet idyll in creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquility on the Prague island. On the other hand, the actual film concept, the cast of main characters led by Bolek Polívka Miroslav Vladyka and Josef Somr, and several type-actors, along with a series of successful gags, amounts to a respectable overall impression of 70%. It is not a waste of time, which cannot be said about the vast majority of current Czech productions. A decent relaxing film for relaxation and a good mood. The pleasant musical background is also enjoyable.

Valiant (2005)

englanti I unfortunately was at the cinema with my small children during the premiere of Valiant and I must say that it was a mistake. The basic idea and the skeleton of the story are solid, but the specific screenplay and characterization of the individual characters are not. The core problem lies in placing the story on the front line of World War II and attempting to create a spectacle clearly intended for younger children. Some associations are quite funny, but they are mostly appreciated by adults. Many attempts at humor fall flat and the characters are only superficially outlined. Overall impression: 40%. The concept and execution both failed...

Villit kuviot (1998)

englanti Not that the film doesn't feature several unexpected and shocking twists, not that there aren't two attractive and sexy actresses in it, not that there aren't several suspenseful moments... But it's all so overly cluttered in terms of the screenplay that it actually parodies itself. There are simply too many flashy plot twists, to the point where the story, can't even be discussed at the end, transitions into absurdity. In the end, it's just a mere screenwriting exercise. Overall impression: 40%.

Bringing Down the House (2003)

englanti The problem with the movie is the weak screenplay, which did not even come close to utilizing the potential that the subject brought. It is simply not very funny, furthermore Latifah's performance seemed uncomfortably forced and overplayed. The movie also does not surprise at all with its ending. Overall impression 35 %. The film is saved by Martin, who is not particularly stunning but reliable, and also by Levy in a smaller role.

Embrace of the Vampire (1995)

englanti Embrace of the Vampire is a strange film that evokes ambiguous feelings in me. On one hand, it has a silly script, below-average actors (Charlotte Lewis, Gregg Vance), and above all, it mystifies by pretending to be a horror, which it truly isn't even by accident, and it can disgust genre fans to extremities. On the other hand, I cannot deny its delightfully decadent erotic atmosphere - the heavily made-up and drugged Alyssa Milano scenes, filmed through a filter, have a greater effect on me than any pornographic film. It's simply an erotic B-movie that doesn't go very far in depicting nudity and sex but still maintains its style by using certain important erotic elements, especially for fetishists, and most importantly, it has a huge advantage in the casting of the charming Milano, who was at the peak of her charms at the time and earns the film a star on her own. Overall impression 35%.

Pyörryksissä (2000)

englanti When I saw this comedy for the first time, I really enjoyed it, but honestly mainly because of the devilishly charming Elizabeth Hurley rather than the quality of the script and the acting performances. In addition, I had the opportunity to watch the original version since then, and this comparison did not turn out well at all for the remake. The difference is two honest stars. The original version relied on very good acting and a quality script with witty dialogue in British style. Bedazzled juxtaposes Elizabeth's sexy outfits and her accentuated bosom with a series of gags, some of which are not strong and especially some are predictable. It is still a light above-average American comedy, but I can't get rid of memories of the original film. Overall impression 50%.

Roter Stern über Deutschland (2001) (sarja)

englanti Translated text with HTML tags: Document interesting in its subject, as it brings interesting information about the operations of Soviet units on German territory. The processing, however, is a bit dry and lacks perspective in some places. It would probably be better if a different cinematography tackled a similar topic and provided an outsider's perspective. Overall impression: 60 %.
