Chaos Walking (2021)

englanti A candidate for the Golden Raspberry for the most frustrating film and the worst "expensive" film of the year. Tom Holland, after the great Cherry, and Mads Mikkelsen, after the excellent Riders of Justice, step into a big pile of shit, a film that slightly tarnishes their reputation. Doug Liman, mysteriously without Tom Cruise, is a complete loser, and while watching, I had the feeling that a woman was directing the film because shooting a sci-fi post-apocalyptic blockbuster without a single action scene is like serving goulash without beef and dumplings in a restaurant awarded 3 Michelin stars. While watching, I had feelings similar to watching The Host from 2013. Extremely boring, slow, uninteresting with terribly cheap CGI effects (that digital cloud around the characters is really monstrous). It does have an original idea where people can read minds, which might have sounded good on paper, but it is presented in an extremely annoying style, and I believe that without this element, the film would have been more enjoyable. I was hoping that at least the finale would save it, and when I saw the whole village on horses, which was leading to an interesting battle, it ultimately ends with a 1-on-1 duel, and at that moment, Liman nailed the coffin shut. I don't know what is worse, the film or the people who rate it equally or, God forbid, even better than Godzilla vs Kong. Seeing the film in the cinema, I'm still digesting it for a week. Proper teen shite.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)

englanti A review from the perspective of a sweaty intellectual who has never left the house, after the 10th Mank and Nomadland without any knowledge of Kaiju, convinced that it is another artistic black and white romantic drama full of emotions, erotica, long shots, lyricism, allegories, and character development, and is ultimately horrified by the result. Oh well. I was hoping that we would watch Godzilla as a housewife drinking wine and constantly taking pills, taking care of four little Godzilla-cubs, and soon a man would come into her life and change it. Yes, King Kong in a tailor-made Armani suit. He is respected lawyer currently dealing with a dark case in the King Skull Tribunal, travels across the country and sees emotionally exhausted Godzilla in a picturesque cafe. Love at first sight, deep romance, emotions to the bone, she doesn't mind at all that King Kong is black because she is not racist, but on the other hand, she is strongly pious and has a dark, drug-filled past. They both experience the most beautiful moments of their lives, but soon there is a crisis that culminates like in The War of the Roses, and, in a plot twist, Godzilla learns that King Kong is actually gay and a spineless scum. Unfortunately, the drama does not unfold with intense atmosphere and an emphatic portrayal the characters, sighed the intellectual sadly. Once every two years, a proper monster movie comes out and it's a problem, but the fact that 400 dramas and soap operas are released annually for a few euros, that's fine. Finally, a movie where I don't have to watch the clock, I don't look around in boredom, thinking that a spider is crawling on the wall, and I won't fall asleep until I finish the last bite of popcorn. The action is properly grand, epic, the fights have verve, the journey to the center of the Earth is more original than another movie about a man with Alzheimer's. The clash of the two titans is definitely more interesting than another dull story, of which there are plenty, and whoever doesn't like it can go watch Malcolm & Marie. 8/10.

Monster Party (2018)

englanti A passable one-off that is enough to kill a boring evening. Monster Party has a relatively cool concept about three thieves infiltrating a fancy villa, where detox therapy of serial killers is performed, and of course, things go awry. The first half is a bit slow, but then it picks up quite well. The gore is pretty good, although nothing extreme or new, but it was definitely enjoyable. In terms of craftsmanship, it’s not bad, and from the cast, I liked Erin Moriarty, whom most know as Starlight from The Boys, but something was missing. Either a more distinctive style or sharper gore, I hardly noticed any humor, and definitely it could have been more intense and wild. However, boredom is not to be feared and that's the main thing. 5.5/10.

Kuka tappoi Saran? (2021) (sarja)

englanti Who cares who killed Sara! I'm not at all happy with Netflix on this one. In a Mexico-thriller-mystery connection, one expects Mexican cartels, people trafficking, torture, murder, drugs, but hey, this is a soft soap opera from Mexico that is pure drama, and literally nothing interesting happens there for the entire series. In the first episode it's still alright, a guy gets out of prison after 18 years and decides to get revenge on the family that put him there. You'd expect him that after 18 years, he would have come with an insane plan like the the Professor in Money Heist in 18 years, but here he can't do more than threaten. By the end of the series, I was vainly hoping that at least half the people would be dead, but that was me being overly optimistic. This is a classic melodrama, dealing with family relationships, who's sleeping with whom and who's cheating on whom. The only thing I liked are the numerous erotic scenes, that's also the only thing that the creators managed to impress me with, except the central gay couple, who are perhaps there more often than the main character 😃 In terms of script, I found it weak (Mexico is not Spain after all), the characters didn't stick to my heart, there's annoying flashbacks every five minutes, and I had trouble figuring out which character it was, and since there's nothing going on that interested me, the fun went by the wayside. After five episodes I was hesitant to finish the series and I would have done better to give up then. The biggest indignity is that what you wait seven hours for the creators to leave the door open for a possible second season, and I won't be there. Women and soap opera or drama lovers might be satisfied, I'll have to go watch samurai and ninjas now to fix my mood. This was a downright waste of time. 4/10.

Honeydew (2020)

englanti If I had to describe this film in a few words, it would be Hereditary + The Witch = Honeydew. What they have in common is that all threr are controversial, divide audiences into two camps, and regular horror fans probably won't be pleased with Honeydew (it has no gore, jump scares, and terror). Surprisingly, however, I enjoyed it and found some positive aspects. The story is a somewhat classic horror template. A couple in love goes camping, they are kicked off someone else's land, and they end up at the only house around, where a creepy grandma lives and the weirdness can begin. Although the film progresses at a slower pace, there’s a constant "wtf" atmosphere and interesting details that you can focus on (a skull carved in a radiator, etc.). In the second half, the film even shifts into exploitative waters, where the emphasis is more on psychological violence than physical, but it works flawlessly. It has the atmosphere and a touch of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There are a few interesting plot twists (one of them I really liked), and a big plus is the music, which is undoubtedly top-notch. The sound designer put his heart and soul into it, and I haven't heard such a creepy musical score in a long time (the sound of a whetstone in the background is really unpleasant). It's creepy, atmospheric, depressing, hopeless, with an artistic flair and plenty of interesting ideas and elements (split image), resulting in a unique horror experience that drew me in and definitely caught my attention – and that's saying something from a person who despises slow-paced movies. 7.5/10.

Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (2019) (TV elokuva)

englanti A thriller based on true events from a women's asylum with the beautiful Christina Ricci. A journalist goes undercover to investigate the asylum, but she is deemed “positively demented” and is kept there for a while, where she experiences the inhumane conditions firsthand. As a TV movie, it is fairly decently shot and acted, and there are even some plot surprises. However, the film progresses at a slower pace and the experiments, the treatments and the torture take a secondary, possibly even tertiary role. I prefer genre-similar films like A Cure for Wellness, Stonehearst Asylum or even Ratched. But fans of asylum settings should give Nellie Bly a chance. 6/10.

Don’t Peek (2020)

englanti A good and original short featuring a demon that scares a girl through virtual reality. The atmosphere and final jump-scare are well done. Girls will be scared!! This short has been so successful that it is now being made into a feature film, which Timur Bekmambetov directing. 7/10.

Un plan parfait (2012)

englanti Great romantic comedy. It has an interesting story focusing on Diane Kruger, who has been happily in a relationship for ten years. However, according to family tradition, she knows that the real happy marriage is the second one, so out of superstition, she decides to marry a random man to prevent the "curse" and chooses Dany Boon, on whom her flirting tactics don't work at all. It’s nice, enjoyable, with a fast pace, a beautiful Diane, a good setting (Kenya), and effective humor. 8/10.

Star Wars: Squadrons - Hunted (2020)

englanti A 7-minute Star Wars CGI payload, more epic than all Star Wars films combined. A visual and action feast! 8/10.

Your Honor (2020) (sarja)

englanti So far a clear contender for series of the year. Literally breathtaking. Your Honor has an excellent story about a respected judge (Bryan Cranston in top form!) whose son accidentally hits a young motorcyclist during an asthma attack, and the motorcyclist dies on the spot. The son panics and flees the scene. Upon discovering that the deceased motorcyclist was the son of the biggest mob boss in New Orleans, Jimmy Baxter, Bryan is willing to do anything to protect his son, even beyond the boundaries of the law. A perfect duel between the esteemed Judge and the formidable Jimmy Baxter (Michael Stuhlbarg is excellent and takes the best from Mickey Cohen). The series has a great pace, delivering one murderous twist after another. It is masterfully directed and acted. I held my breath for the entire nine hours, the atmosphere is stifling and constantly unpleasant. All the characters have dense personalities, the plot surprises at every moment and takes unexpected directions. Fans of gangster stories, legal dramas, crime, and tense thrillers will all find something to enjoy. In the final episode, I received such a blow between the eyes that I am still recovering from it. Emotions to the core. The only downside is that there was no proper gang war in the streets, but I'll forgive that because I drooled like I haven't in a long time. I loved it, Your Honor. 9/10.
