Legend of Hell (2012)

englanti German underground butcher Olaf Ittenbach! When it comes to gore, Olaf is good. The gore the make-up and practical effects are all top-notch and will definitely please aficionados with a fine appetite, but the rest? Ufff.. I don't mind that the story is shit, what bothers me is that there is a story at all. When a director like Olaf is shooting a horror film and knows that the only positive aspect is gore, why waste time on something that no one here cares about. At times, the film has a really slow pace, and ultimately, there is not enough gore compared to the uninspiring babble of amateur actors. It can definitely be made more entertaining and engaging (Flowers, Hotel Inferno). 4/10.

Skywatch (2019)

englanti Exciting, original, and imaginative sci-fi with drones, with a delightful cameo by Jude Law. Nice effects and I had a great time for 11 minutes. 7.5/10.

Good Business (2017)

englanti An interesting idea and decent CGI featuring a group of soldiers that trade weapons with an alien enemy. I would also take 10 minutes with a more action-packed finale, but it’s definitely interesting. 6/10.

True Detective (2014) (sarja)

englanti I'm probably the only one, but for me, this is possibly the biggest disappointment in a TV series in the past ten years. This is definitely not another Chernobyl, Mindhunter, Queen’s Gambit, or Money Heist. I haven't seen such an overhyped series in a long time. Maybe if I had watched it in 2014, I would have rated it differently, but in terms of Crime, Mindhunter and Night Stalker are on a completely different level of quality. Even the French crime drama from the same year, SK1, is much more intense. The only thing that can be praised are Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who do a really good job in their roles, and the craftsmanship is also at a high level, but is that enough? Not for me. The most shocking thing is that there is only one murder throughout the series, and the introduction of the killer happens twenty minutes before the end, which is unforgivable in the crime genre. Ironically, the series should have begun where it ends. You hope for ritual occult murders that would add darkness, brutality, discomfort, and instead, they deal with typical family relationships, who's sleeping with whom, character development, and similar matters that absolutely didn't interest me. The only memorable scene in the whole eight hours is Daddario's breasts, and that is unfortunately shameful. In the end, the investigation and evidence collection play a supporting role (most of the time the series takes place at a station, in a car, or in someone's bed), and if someone finds rainy weather darker than mutilated corpses, then I must be living in a different world. Not to mention the slow and uninteresting pace. As a drama, I would be willing to give it a 7, but in terms of crime and thriller, it's a 4 for me, so a compromise somewhere around 5.

Hasta el cielo (2020)

englanti Director Daniel Calparsoro already surprised me with the tough crime thriller Twin Murders: The Silence of the White City. This time he takes on a gang of young criminals craving money and fame, and it's fresh exotic entertainment with flair. I am very satisfied with the cast, it features two familiar characters from Money Heist (Rio in the lead role and detective Tamayo, who is after him again – coincidence?). Rio's boss is the biggest Spanish star Luis Tosar, and I am particularly satisfied with the female cast, whether it's the beautiful MILF lawyer or the two Spanish beauties, I will probably dream about them for a few more days. The film, with a runtime of two hours, has a great pace, it moves forward quickly, Rio robs one jewelry store after another and constantly evades the police. Great summer music, erotic scenes, tension, and a tense finale with a shocking climax that adds an extra star. In terms of the screenplay, it could have been more intricately developed, but I definitely had more fun than with the last batch of films. 7/10.

A Young Man with High Potential (2018)

englanti An entertaining festival-fodder thriller from Germany. The story focuses on a man computer programmer geek, meaning he has no friends and no experience with women. Everything changes when beautiful Klara comes to him asking for cooperation on a computer project. Klara is kind to him, sympathizes with him, and the protagonist slowly succumbs to her charms. I don't want to reveal more. It's a slow burn, but it doesn't get boring. Thanks to the interesting characters, the film manages to hold the audience's attention. There is also a bit of gore (detailed butchery), a bit of black humor, and the psychology of the main characters definitely stands out. For a intimate thriller, it's surprisingly good, and I think it is worth attention. 6/10.

Benny Loves You (2019)

englanti If this film had been made in the 80s, it would be a cult classic today. Unfortunately, it is unlikely to impress many people nowadays, but despite the obvious lack of finances, I felt the love for horror, the emotion, and the effort, and I will repay the creators with at least three stars. It's a mix of Chucky, Willy's Wonderland, Puppet Master, and Gremlins, reviving the genre of demonic toys that was popular 30-40 years ago. Today it is actually a rarity, so I appreciate it more than another FF, ghost story, slasher, exorcism, or drama. The film suffers from a low budget, and although there are enough dead bodies in the end, the gore didn’t really impress me, it's not the proper make-up work as in other cheaper films, although the intestines in the vacuum cleaner were cool. In terms of horror, it's somewhat weaker, but I liked the various references to Chucky, Terminator, Leatherface, Evil Dead, and others. The characters were fairly likeable, and I liked that the film doesn't take itself seriously for even a minute – the dark British humor is probably the best thing it has to offer. I laughed in some scenes (the police visit scene, with dismembered bodies everywhere in the apartment, is great), and Benny's "Ta-da!" stuck in my memory for a while. If the you get into the rules of the game, you will definitely have fun. 5/10.

Macho Man (2015)

englanti An enjoyable and easygoing romantic comedy from Germany. The story focuses on a shy guy who has a hard time with women and does not get along well with his colleagues at work. One day he falls in love with a beautiful Turkish girl who sees something different and unusual in him, and they get together. Everything changes when her brother turns the shy hero into a confident guy, and from that moment on, a rather funny comedic journey begins, where the performance of the protagonist is especially entertaining. He was really good. 6/10.

The Dry (2020)

englanti A crime drama without murders is like a brothel without whores – this is no Se7en. The Dry is a relatively well-directed and well-acted drama (there are sadly very few crime elements), without any proper investigation or gathering of evidence. The two hours drag on like a leaky faucet, nothing interesting, innovative, or refreshing happens, and personally, I have no desire to waste time on something like this. The ending is relatively decent and the music is noteworthy, but that extremely unengaging slow pace is lethal. 4/10.

Chaos Walking (2021)

englanti A candidate for the Golden Raspberry for the most frustrating film and the worst "expensive" film of the year. Tom Holland, after the great Cherry, and Mads Mikkelsen, after the excellent Riders of Justice, step into a big pile of shit, a film that slightly tarnishes their reputation. Doug Liman, mysteriously without Tom Cruise, is a complete loser, and while watching, I had the feeling that a woman was directing the film because shooting a sci-fi post-apocalyptic blockbuster without a single action scene is like serving goulash without beef and dumplings in a restaurant awarded 3 Michelin stars. While watching, I had feelings similar to watching The Host from 2013. Extremely boring, slow, uninteresting with terribly cheap CGI effects (that digital cloud around the characters is really monstrous). It does have an original idea where people can read minds, which might have sounded good on paper, but it is presented in an extremely annoying style, and I believe that without this element, the film would have been more enjoyable. I was hoping that at least the finale would save it, and when I saw the whole village on horses, which was leading to an interesting battle, it ultimately ends with a 1-on-1 duel, and at that moment, Liman nailed the coffin shut. I don't know what is worse, the film or the people who rate it equally or, God forbid, even better than Godzilla vs Kong. Seeing the film in the cinema, I'm still digesting it for a week. Proper teen shite.
