Die dunkle Seite des Mondes (2015)

englanti A solid thriller from the German-Luxembourg waters about a successful lawyer who, with a lady he meets at a party, gets a taste of the local magic mushrooms and experiences a horror trip that turns a decent, successful man into not only a wreck but also a maniac with a thirst for violence. A very intense and raw film that kept me entertained from start to finish. 80%.

Manhunt (2017)

englanti After a long hiatus, John Woo returns to what he does best, trashy bloodshed in slow motion, although this time he didn't overdo it so much. Story-wise, the film didn't interest me too much and especially in the first half I was slightly bored, but from the first big shootout in the house, which was quite possibly the best of the whole film, things gained momentum and didn't let up until the end. It's pretty bloody, there's not much room for fights, it’s mostly shootouts, and sometimes I felt that it was too mindless, but the purpose of an action B-movie is fulfilled. It's okay for one viewing, but I'm not impressed. 60%.

Willkommen bei den Hartmanns (2016)

englanti A nice laid-back German comedy with a topical theme of refugees, featuring Elyas M’Barek from Suck Me Shakespeer in a supporting role. The humour didn’t hit me that hard, I was smiling rather than dying of laughter, but the film maintains a very pleasant pace, it has likable characters whose fate you care about, it manages to move you at times, and it deals with traditional family troubles that hopefully never get old. Fine entertainment for the whole family. 75%

Escobar: Paradise Lost (2014)

englanti After watching Narcos, I'll take anything by Escobar, and I also enjoyed this one a lot. Benicio Del Toro was absolutely flawless as Escobar, even though the plot focused mainly on Josh Hutcherson falling in love with Escobar's niece and that brings trouble. The final half-hour is packed with so much tension that I almost didn't breathe. Very good and rough. 80%.

When We First Met (2018)

englanti Another time loop film, this time in the comedy genre with the beautiful Alexandra Daddario. It has a nice pace, a decent script for a comedy, good performances and even though you won't die laughing, it's good entertainment which, thanks to the time loop, is engaging and interesting enough with a message in the end. I had fun. Netflix hit it again. 75%.

Yeokmo - banraneui sidae (2017)

englanti You could tell it was a debut, because for a South Korean film it looks unusually cheaper than the usual technical standard. We have a Korean historical B-movie that is action-packed and the fights don't look bad, but the CGI blood spoils the impression a bit, the dark filter didn't work for me and the plot is also quite shallow, so it's clearly average, but OK for a first attempt. 60%

Downsizing (2017)

englanti It is almost a sin to turn such an interesting material into a film so uninteresting, boring and without creativity. Matt Damon is going downhill, his quite possibly last good film was The Martian, he has disappointed twice this year and his upcoming film Oceans' 8 doesn't have much of a future. The first hour of the film was still passable and Christoph Waltz gave it quite an energy, but after the arrival of the annoying Vietnamese woman who got on my nerves like no character in a long time, the film degraded two notches and also absolutely deviated from the original concept – I felt I was watching a different film. 40%.

The Commuter (2018)

englanti The standard Liam Neeson reunites with director Jaume Collet-Serra in a suspenseful thriller that is fun to watch but unfortunately doesn't bring much new to the table. It bothers me a bit that every new Liam film, is actually exactly the same as the previous one. Non-Stop was set on a plane, The Commuter takes place on a train, and the plot is more or less similar, except that I found Non-Stop more entertaining and its denouement more surprising, whereas here I found out all too soon. Too many similarities for my taste, as if they didn't know how to handle the script. That said, the train derailment is solid and Liam still manages the smaller fights, so it's still above average, but it could have been more creative. 70%

The Ritual (2017)

englanti The first notch of the year from Britain? I quite regret not going to the cinema the other day when I had the chance, the atmosphere of the film is very good. A group of friends take a trip to the Swedish woods, where they become hallucinated, paranoid and haunted by something supernatural. It keeps up the pace. the scenes in the cabin are decently creepy and the central evil is excellent, too bad they didn't pay attention to gore as well, but still a decent affair and one of the best this year. 75%

Labyrintti - Tappava lääke (2018)

englanti Third visit to the cinema. A decent ending to a three-part teen saga that doesn't offend and definitely has something to offer in the cinema. The opening action set-piece is one of the best sequences of the film, it makes you feel you are watching a snippet from a Fast and Furious movie, but the other action scenes are also good, especially in the zombie tunnel where Wes Ball conjures a thick horror atmosphere, or the chase with the robot spider, or the finale, which could have been more destructive for my taste. Wes Ball is going to make a proper horror film next, and here he manages to solidly create tension and anxiety in a few scenes, so I'm starting to root for him. Decent entertainment that's nice to watch. 75%
