The Great Transatlantic Cable (2006) (TV elokuva)

englanti The expression "laying cable" gains a completely new dimension. :D An excellent documentary on a topic that always fascinated me. A pleasant hour in the company of World Information Systems. ...up to ten dollars a word. Remember that next time you pay your phone bill!

Ender's Game (2013)

englanti They filmed it right. It could have been done a tad better - more desolate, but even so it’s a breath of fresh air among the sci-fi fantasies of recent times. The spirit of Card’s book was maintained, meaning some truncation and slight speeding up, but this helps the story. Hood is clearly a fan and does his very best. Visually, Ender’s Game glitters like an A-movie blockbuster, but the plot is more profound than theater audiences are used to and a lot of them will leave the theater feeling they’ve been robbed. They won’t understand the ingenious ending or they won’t like it. Perfect build-up in battles, not a boring movie and gallons of emotion can be squeezed out of the graduation. The casting is marvelous, especially the kids and Asa Butterfield has no problem selling her character to the viewer. Maybe they should have chosen a bigger fanatic than Ford. Jablonsky again serves up marvelous themes. I wonder if he record furniture.

České století (2013) (sarja)

englanti Pilot: Unusually well-made for a Czech series. Father of the Nation, Masaryk, is presented here as a master of manipulation, a subversive element and the EU probably wouldn’t be very pleased with his opinions. The acting performances are excellent. It turns out that we have some really good actors; all they need is some meaningful dialogs and they will delight both the creators and the viewers. Martin Huba gives a very confident performance in episode one, even though it is Donutil who excels in their final verbal exchange. This series charts the history of the first century of the existence of Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic, starting with its founding in 1918, through occupation by the Nazis during WW2, forty years of Communism and then the Velvet Revolution and Václav Havel, the split of Czechoslovakia, right up to the present day. All in all an excellent project and one of the best series ever made by Czech Television.

Turbo (2013)

englanti A fun, relaxing cartoon with an emphasis on detail. An excellent gang of snails, great dubbing, tension, humor and even nerve-racking scenes. After the excellent Rush I was pleased to return to the circuit, this time in Indianapolis. If you don’t like racing with Turbo will find this hard to chew, but what is crazier than a snail racing against the fastest machine on the planet? White shadow!

R.I.P.D. - Haamukytät (2013)

englanti A light-hearted, bite-size snack. A bit like Men in Black with ghosts instead of aliens. Here and there a snappy line, here and there a good idea, but nothing world-shattering. Bridges is funny, but steals the show too much, Reynolds is average. The best are scenes with their human avatars (the blond with the hairdryer), a shame there weren’t more.

Escape Plan (2013)

englanti Not just a long awaited meeting of two forgotten legends, but a good movie too. As far as possible, of course, there are so many coincidences, stupid decisions taken by the villains and unshocking surprises. But no matter. The structure is old, but the shell is newly painted. An enjoyable struggle between old procedures and modern methods throughout the entire picture, which gave me a pleasant feeling while watching. Stallone appears as a seasoned inmate and escape artist, Schwarzenegger knows how to get his hands on what’s needed and Caviezel represents the assiduous slipperiness so popular today (and he really enjoys it). The other characters are just there to make up the numbers, the most hilarious being “50 Cent" Jackson as a hacker with morals. The final punch-up is very nicely done and when Arnold picks up the machine gun, a smile spreads across the face of all orthodox fans. I don’t want to dwell on the resilience of the helicopter and the subsequent exploding barrels... I suppose it had to be included. Overall I’m satisfied, something that I couldn’t imagine originally. Old school on its best form. + Arnold’s Austrian way of distracting attention - that’s definitely the high point of the movie.

The Devil's Double (2011)

englanti Based on a true story... Sadam’s son was the embodiment of the word megashitstain and the story about him and his double is fresh and original, although it does follow certain traditions and it’s a joy to watch. Money, women, cars, this is Scarface in Iraq... Even so, DD is a little creaky in places and sometimes it runs out of breath and has to be saved by the likes of the excellent Cooper and, surprise, surprise, Lee Tamahori!

Monsterit-Yliopisto (2013)

englanti It was nice to return to this world. The child versions of Mike and Sully are still entertaining and the plot about studying isn’t bad. We’ve already seen making fun of nerds, clubs etc. so many times before, but it doesn’t spoil anything in the movie. The “university isn’t really worth it" ending is quite enjoyable and presents kids with the novel message that there’s nothing better than to start from scratch.

Rush (2013)

englanti I don’t remember them. It’s set in 1976 which is ten years before I was born. But thanks to Howard, it doesn’t matter, because he is great at intimating the atmosphere of a time when car racing wasn’t just based on math (the great closing conversation digs a lot at this fact) and when people like hunt were our heroes - knights in shining armor. A perfectly balanced screenplay that has something to say, devoted direction, precise, while it’s clear that this is a labor of love. Hemsworth has never acted so well (or he wasn’t acting and that’s what he’s like) and Brühl simply became Lauda. Rush is a picture that refuels faith in car racing, in movies about car racing and about well-told stories from real life as such. The dialogs are polished, the visuals are somewhere between a modern style and faithfully capturing seventies style, the tension can be cut with a knife and there is no chance to get bored during those two hours. I expect at least three Oscar nominations. The best movie this year so far. Zimmer risks nothing in terms of topic. P.S.: Girls will like this too, even if they don’t like racing, because the racing takes up only about a quarter of an hour of the movie. Happiness is your biggest enemy.

The Lone Ranger (2013)

englanti The Bruckheimer filters rather spoil the otherwise convincing western atmosphere served up to us so successfully by Verbinski. The struggle with this childish, sometimes infantile and senile (the narrator forgets to tell us all the details because he’s an old, crazy grampa) story is uphill. Good ideas here and there and the absolutely amazing train chase save the reputation of this movie. Hammer doesn’t stand out, Depp doesn’t disappoint and the only performance rally worth remembering is William Fichtner as an unscrupulous bad guy who laughs through his teeth. Zimmer’s music is again the tops and you can tell that he really enjoyed doing this movie.
