Baxter (1989)

englanti Ugh, I just cannot understand how anyone could possibly use the word comedy in connection with this movie. Baxter would not even know what comedy was if it bit it on the nose. It is a weighty drama bizarrely shot from the point of view of a dog who comments on what’s going on in the world of humans. This movie is, therefore, seen through the eyes of a dog who has it slightly messed up in his head (and probably understandably so, unlike with the human characters). It is a rather unexceptional and unpleasantly cruel statement about (in)humanity, which is definitely not going to cheer you up in any way. In any case, I was left with a slightly bad aftertaste because of how the distinctly tame bull terrier was probably treated during the filming of this movie, when a performance with ferocious reactions was demanded of him, even though he clearly had no desire to be fierce.

Midnight Mass (2021) (sarja)

englanti This is probably the best thing that King never wrote, although it closely resembles at least one of his works. Midnight Mass is more of a drama than a horror series and is aimed mainly at patient audiences, who are going to appreciate the thought-provoking dialogues and rich characterization more than any significant jump scares, as there is not much of that in this show.

Sorority Girl (1957)

englanti Intrigues and psychological terror among the students of an all-girls boarding school directed by Roger Corman? It is trite and cheesy, yet, considering it is such a small production made for drive-in cinemas, it works surprisingly well on the emotional level.

The Gore Gore Girls (1972)

englanti Yes, Hershell Gordon Lewis made the most schlocky piece of schlock, in which random gore and gratuitous nudity take precedence over technical execution, the crime drama storyline, and even its attempts at comedy. However, it is such a pure and ingenuous B-movie that it almost makes you smile. In other words, this movie has a "heart", and also probably the most bizarre idea for a murder I have ever seen in a horror movie.

Rivelazioni di un maniaco sessuale al capo della squadra mobile (1972)

englanti This is really a very straightforward and trashy movie. However, it is actually the best giallo thriller I have seen in a long time in terms of entertainment. The best thing about this movie is that the audience is not so easily able to guess the identity of the perpetrator because of the sheer number of suspects the movie throws up, just like in any proper crime drama. Furthermore, the iconic look of the killer’s appearance is very cool. I definitely recommend this movie to true aficionados of this particular subgenre, although you should be aware that the original Italian title Rivelazioni di un maniaco sessuale al capo della squadra mobile is basically a spoiler if you translate it literally.

Antiviral (2012)

englanti Brandon Cronenberg does not deny his origins here, and so he presents a rather visceral and stomach-churning body horror which is a scathing satirical comment on contemporary society. Antiviral is based on a great idea - perfect for a short film. The only real problem with this movie is that Cronenberg has selfishly stretched it out to a lengthy 108 minutes.

The Deep House (2021)

englanti Congratulations to the directing duo of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury - they had such a fantastic and substantial chilling subject matter, and they just killed it so effectively with a moronic and clueless screenplay, what a couple of real show-offs!

Wacko (1982)

englanti Wacko is an attempt at a movie parody in the style of the successful Airplane!, only this time with slasher genre. Does that sound good to you? It is not. All the attempts at comedy in this movie end with the audience shaking their heads and cringe. I for one welcome some dry humor, however, the humor in this movie should rather be described as totally bland. I felt sorry for George Kennedy and Joe Don Baker since they were both trying so hard in vain.

Last Night in Soho (2021)

englanti Edgar Wright has made a kind of antithesis to the idealized utopia of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He has created a movie for all those people who have their heads in the clouds, and who like to dream about how they would have lived in a different ("better") time. However, every period in the past had its advantages and disadvantages. Last Night in Soho is a horror movie for fans of imaginative visuals and knowing winks combined with modern trends, even though it is doubtful you are going to be terrified by it. Anyway, I found it quite enjoyable and I enjoy replaying it in my head.

Eternals (2021)

englanti First of all, I have to point out that Eternals is one of the more interesting Marvel movies. It is a rather whimsical and perhaps over-ambitious extravaganza that both introduces us to individual heroes and then quickly puts them into action collectively. It is as if all the origins of the first phase of the MCU up to the Avengers team-up were condensed into one single movie. So you can imagine that there is a shit-ton of unavoidable introductions and explanations vs. very little action (and when the action does come, it is a terrible mess of CGI). However, I was pleased to see that the main protagonists rather unusually and uniquely deal with at least some of the dilemmas of whether what they are doing is really the right thing to do. This therefore also makes the villains slightly ambiguous - I would like to see more of that approach in the future! Also, just when I had been so taken in by the rather impressive conclusion and was practically determined to give it four stars there came what was probably the worst mid-credits scene I have ever seen in the Marvel Universe. It seemed like it was something out of a Shrek movie, and therefore undermined any enthusiasm for what had happened before by reminding me what a calculated product it really is. Plus, if Marvel itself does not take its "different and ambitious" movie seriously, how could I respect it?
