Standard Operating Procedure (2008)

englanti When you see the picture, you don’t see outside the frame. The dark side of the “nice guys". Hard to say which is more amazing Morris’ choice of topic or its delivery, which in no way suffers from talking heads. It’s fascinating how he manages to make people tell him even what they don’t want to reveal, I sit there gobsmacked at how he’s not afraid let the camera do the work and to record details of those questioned, which often gives away more about them than a thousand words. And I just love his cooperation with top composers. This applied to his previous work and it applies here too. Simply the exact opposite of flashy, technicolor bullshit with nothing to say that have the cheek to call themselves documentaries.

Grace (2009)

englanti A contraceptive justification of vegetarianism. Jordon Ladd acts his heart out, the screenplay certainly doesn’t avoid controversial topics, but I got the impression that Paul Solet doesn’t know how to handle the tense atmosphere and so it sometimes becomes boring, so it would have been better if considerably shorter. If you expect an intimate, psychological good mood drain, you might not be disappointed.

The Damned United (2009)

englanti I was expecting a regular sports movie “How the outsider and the looser eventually won" in soccer colors. But no. Most of the movie is a coach’s “War of the Roses", perfect period music, pleasant hyperbole and Michael Sheen, who shines again. This time as an ambitious, capable, guy who can’t see further than the end of his nose. Simply a picture that loves soccer and isn’t afraid of showing it, even though you won’t see any soccer as such in it. And the ways in which the individual matches are (not) imparted to us are very inventive.

Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (2009)

englanti A movie where Lorenzo Lamas seriously out-acts everybody else, on the principle that he mustn’t be bad. And he isn’t. Primarily thanks to the last twenty minutes which, no joke, is the very depths of D-cinema that perhaps only Ed Wood would dream about. And only in his wildest of dreams. Simply an “instant classic" which does no shame to the title.

Kevytkenkäinen (2008)

englanti You know those harmless comedies that you find primarily in the repertoire of Vinohrady Theatre or Na Jezerce Theatre, almost certainly starring Jirásková or Hrušinský? One of those plays that you would never go to alone, but when you take Mom, Granny, Dad and anybody else from the family to it, you can be sure that you will survive, your parents will be happy, Granny will be over the moon about how Jirásková is still enchanting and jumps about like a spring deer. Well this is exactly the same. So much so, that I’m just waiting for it to appear in the Vinohrady Theatre repertoire, starring Jirásková and guest-starring Hrušinský.

Iron Maiden: Flight 666 (2009)

englanti I have no great love for Iron Maiden and I haven’t even heard any of their music for a few years no, but their Rock in Rio is the absolute zenith of shit-kicking concert in your living room movies. And now I should correct myself and turn that last sentence into past tense because, seven years later, they outdo themselves. Light 666 has more balls than any other concert ever (especially in HD with DTS sound track), and the idea of recording each song in a different place on the tour is excellent and even better for being supported by the director who devotes equal time to the group and to the pumped audience. And it’s nice to see that people around the world all know how to have a good time, whether they are from North or South America, or even Asia. And this is the first time that I have broken out into a sweat just watching a recording of a concert tour, ruunn tooooo tha hiiilllzzz...

englanti The Velvet Underground ...Amadeus, Amadeus... The Cure ...Amadeus, Amadeus... The Rolling Stones ...Amadeus, Amadeus... Lou Reed ...Amadeus, Amadeus... Judas Priest ...Amadeus, Amadeus... Whitesnake ...Amadeus, Amadeus... Amadeus, Amadeus... Amadeus, Amadeus... Or: How to Build Up a Massive Aversion to Falco.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)

englanti The find of the year for those who love “so bad that it’s genius" bullshit. A movie where the list of all mistakes and illogicalities takes up more room than the entire screenplay. And the heavy-duty guilty pleasure is enhanced by the absolutely crazy Czech dubbing. A universe where ninety-nine percent of twenty equals nineteen, where we find the Silver Surfer (in fact two of them) prancing around, where people can eject from airplanes only by speaking Celtic, where little bastards a racing around under the ice cap and where the precise time and place of incidence is determined according to height a darkness of shadow... Well, who wouldn’t love a work of art like that? Not to speak of soap opera relationships that would have blind Esmeralda’s eyeballs drop out of their sockets. And if they had added the line “Duke, I am your father!", then I would have awarded this a full five stars. P.S.: And the not so hidden Pilsner Urquell product placement was also nice to see.

Vinci (2004)

englanti Given the look of the main character, a remake for a Hollywood schlock starring Gerald Buttler about stealing the Mona Lisa wouldn't be a bad idea. Although it would probably be a bit of a joke to remake a film that is itself a rip-off of a Western heist movie.

Kohti uutta (2009)

englanti A heartfelt affair, but more for Mendes than for me, about the fact that life after thirty doesn’t need to be stressful and also “how to go on in life". Just a nice prequel to Mendes’ previous movie. With one difference. The central duo are nice guys that you see far too little of on screen, so I was wishing with all my heart for them not to settle at the Revolutionary Road address, so avoiding the fate that met Frank and April Wheeler.
