'Welcome to Retranchement', the large sign reads at the beginning of this short documentary about a hamlet in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Particularly the older inhabitants get the floor in the film. Like the retired farmer who tells an anecdote about his great-grandfather. His son did not take over the farm; he runs a camp site now. Tourism has also encroached on this area. A woman who had cleaned the church for years proudly shows her decoration, but immediately adds that she rarely wears it, because people react so enviously. The intimate, sometimes touching, sometimes cheerful stories are alternated with tranquil images of nature and of animals on the land. Retranchement is an ordinary village, of which there are so many in the Netherlands. Life has its everyday routine. 'I may well eat a lot, but not know a lot', is a well-known proverb in the region, one of the interviewees says. Perhaps this is why some of them anxiously wonder if everything they say will be shown. (Nederlands Film Festival)
