Erik van Lieshout is a lot (provocative, surprising, exhibitionistic), but everything but boring. Just as in his short work and video installations, in this documentary the artist cheerfully flouts all cinematographic laws. The result is a fascinating peek into the artist’s routine and chaotic creative process. It starts seemingly simple, with an invitation to create an artwork for the Venice Biennale. But will Van Lieshout choose for the prestige of Venice or give preference to his hometown Helmond and his family? Spoiler: He does both and ends up among the cats in the basement of the Hermitage.
