The Netherlands is a free country. To keep it this way, and to persuade its citizens of this ‘fact’, the Dutch Government Information Service commissioned this documentary. Interlaced with images of repressive regimes under which no one is free, the voice-over leads us to the point: the importance of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, or NATO. The film delineates the contrast between freedom of choice in Holland and the oppression of anti-democratic regimes in Russia in the fifties, and the Nazis in Germany. By organising Free Countries in NATO, an attempt is made to take a stand against the ever-threatening Soviet danger. Various episodes from international political events in the forties demonstrate that the Red Peril can only be stopped by learning about the still recent past. One uses this knowledge in the present to preserve a free democracy. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
