Dichter bij de zee

Nearer the Sea registers the end of summer on the North Sea beach at IJmuiden, a scenery a stone's throw from the Hoogovens (metallurgical concern). The season is over, an enclave of old-fashioned cottages is demolished. The occupants themselves do not show themselves. The sound tape registers snippets from their conversations, the camera pans along the houses, the sea, the beach. A film about the changing landscape, about transience, about the melancholy memory of a summer that has gone by. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
