In a dazzlingly gorgeous landscape – shot in beautifully sharp, vivid hues – the teenagers Zahra and Shahnaz walk to a salt mine with their mother. On the way, the girls sum up which of their friends have been married off by now; a 14-year-old classmate had to marry a 73-year-old man. Zahra and Shahnaz get high marks at school and hope to be able to continue their studies. Shahnaz wants to become a teacher, Zahra a doctor. Whether they will succeed depends on their father. The girls belong to the Bakhtiari tribe, a nomadic people that in summer dwells in tents and lives on salt mining. Each of their five elder sisters was married off when they were 9 or 10 years old, which ended their education. Meanwhile, their parents have moved a little with the time; the two youngest daughters are allowed to keep studying as long as a suitable potential husband has not presented himself. According to their brother, who tries to influence his father somewhat, 20 or 25 is a better age for a girl to get married. But father thinks differently and, he explains to documentary filmmaker Behnam Behzadi, who cautiously keeps asking, his will is law. Meanwhile, Zahra would also like to say something to the director – or will she yet swallow her words? (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
