The first film in Takashi Miike’s ‘Black Society Trilogy’ portrays a world of alienation that finds its expression in rape and murder. In this twilight world, where gangster and law enforcer attract and repel each other in waves of violence, Tatsuhito, a dirty cop pursues the gay Chinese warlord, Wang, through the night world of Shinjuku and over to Taiwan. Classic gritty Takashi Miike, who in this case is even darker and grittier. It's evident that he was still finding his form and hyper-stylization, but he was already on the right track. Above all, he was supposed to make a gritty crime thriller, which he ultimately succeeded in doing, and more than well. Some of the scenes really get to you.
