Best friends Kayla and Maddie are not exactly pushovers. During a nightly graffiti excursion, however, they find themselves stalked and eventually abducted. Kayla wakes up in a nondescript forest, locked in some kind of coffin and clueless as to where she might be. Heaven knows what happened to Maddie. Then she notices a scary masked man who approaches her at breakneck speed, all the while swinging a freshly sharpened ax. She decides not to inquire as to his (no doubt peaceful) intentions and runs for her dear life. But then she notices she’s not the only one doing so because seven more women are being chased by men with masks. A deadly cat-and-mouse game ensues. Will solidarity prevail or will each try to save their own skin at all costs? (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival)

englanti The Furies is an Australian slasher flick with overused subject matter that has been only slightly altered. The unnecessarily exaggerated brutality serves no plot purpose, and the work with the behavior of the characters and the resulting “surprising” twists come across as cheap. The creators don’t seem to know that even a slasher movie requires intelligent work with the viewer. ()

englanti A battle royale with references to slashers of the last century, it pretty much delivers on the level it promised. I mean, perfect gore, excellent make-up effects, the creators won me over in this respect, but the rest falls flat. The actresses are unfortunately terrible, the visuals look cheap and the final twist is a rip-off to more famous horror movies. Thus, I recommend it only for gore fans, everyone else can ignore it. 60% ()

englanti If you like bloody carnage in the popular setting of a remote forest and all you need is a mindless showcase of stabbing tools and deaths, you will surely enjoy The Furies. But if you believe that horror creators should know how to work with the viewer, pinpoint the tension, creatively alter the shape of the scenes and escalate the events, then don’t expect much. Although I am a fan of this kind of enthusiast work and appreciate every new idea, this Australian attempt is only halfway between a loose violent ride and dark horror, where the relationships among the characters and a personal revenge are also at stake. That said, for underground horror festivals or a night screening over a beer, Furies is alright. Strong 2*. ()

englanti The Australian co-production The Furies is an interesting example of how to make a great slasher movie in terms of the kills and their depiction and imagination. However, the story is a real bummer as it is really bloated, which presents a bit of a problem. It is as if the attempt at originality here has gone completely awry. It just does not work, and I am sure it will be a disappointment for many viewers. ()
