If you need a demonstration of the difference between the Phallus as an impersonal, abstract concept and the penis as an individual, vulnerable organ, this is the ultimate lesson. In Steifheit (“stiffness”), Albert Sackl films himself naked in time-lapse, attempting to maintain an erection for 4 hours. He has done this 3 times so far, at 10-year intervals. His goal is not masturbatory release; only the grim determination to “get it up” for the impassive camera. As time goes by, the job is more difficult.
