Polina has a difficult life. Her husband, Boria is an unknown poet and earns no money and, although Polina loves him very much and believes in his talent, she is forced to work all hours to support them both. In addition, Boria's mother, Zinaida hates her daughter-in-law and is always trying to turn her son against her. When Zinaida becomes ill, Polina, unable to take care of her, hires a nurse, Larisa. Larisa is a natural 'homemaker' and exactly the kind of woman that Zinaida would love to have as a daughter-in-law, so she comes up with a plan to bring Boria and Larisa together - with startling consequences.
