Godfather of Harlem

I've been putting off watching this show for a while now because I was afraid of another massive dose of BLM propaganda, but it turns out my fears were unsubstantiated. The series was based on actual events, and although the plot was enriched in more ways than one for obvious reasons, it didn’t get turned into a woke farce. That is to say that the series would not have gotten the green light on Netflix on several counts. I'm looking forward to the next season. The pilot episode of the series was a delightful surprise for me. I'm giving bonus points to the creators for nailing that 60s retro vibe (I'm a sucker for retro aesthetics), and setting the stage in the world of organized crime was a brilliant choice for crafting a compelling storyline. This episode didn't quite hit the mark for me like the previous one. It felt like the plot got a bit diluted, leading to a slower pace. I'm concerned that the creators might start focusing too much on uninteresting side storylines at the expense of the main plot. The plot of this episode turned out to be more intriguing than the previous one. While organized crime took a bit of a backseat this time, the creators filled the void with plenty of politics and anti-segregation struggle, which kept me entertained. (30.08.2021)

So I've finally pinpointed what really grates on me about the show: Teddy and his guitar. Whenever it makes an appearance, the whole vibe shifts. It's like hitting a speed bump on a highway. The fifth episode delved mostly into the world of organized crime, which immediately resonated with my twisted inner self. The opening scene felt like Italians in Chicago were celebrating Valentine's Day again. While the subsequent plot was less action-packed, I didn't mind at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the cunning, intrigue, and politics woven throughout. (01.09.2021)

The creators followed a similar style to the previous episode, but this time it was slightly marred by Ted; it seems he can annoy me even without the guitar. I'm just not into those emotional songs that replace an interesting plot. However, I was generally satisfied and enjoyed most of the episode. 4*+ (01.09.2021)

Events are picking up speed, and Bumpy's strategic maneuvers have certainly kept the plot moving forward. Once again, organized crime took center stage, providing much more entertainment than yet another local musical number. The creators maintained a tight hold on the episode's direction, skillfully navigating the truly thrilling conclusion. Sometimes, it's best to quit while you're ahead:-) (02.09.2021)

This episode didn't quite hit the same high notes for me as the previous one, mainly due to the historical political speeches. While I don't fault their inclusion, as they were undoubtedly necessary for context, they did tend to drag on a bit. Nonetheless, the episode once again thrust us into the hands of ruthless criminals who showed what they were capable of. If given enough time, Vincent could probably create a human bonsai. Overall, it was satisfying, despite the slightly slower pace. 4*+ (02.09.2021)

The creators masterfully intertwined the fight for human rights, politics, and organized crime, reflecting how it has been for ages. Why change something that works, right? The performances were stellar again, the atmosphere impeccably crafted, and despite the frequent negotiations, the pace remained very engaging. (04.09.2021)

Despite not being as action-packed as I initially anticipated, the finale was far from disappointing. The most significant events unfolded in distant Dallas, with their repercussions felt in New York. Despite a fair amount of creative liberty, the script remained tethered to real events.
