Smalltown doctor Hozumi and his close friend, cartoonist Soeda, both fall in love with Asako. Hozumi steps back and allows Soeda to marry her. But he becomes sadistic, abusing Asako and taking a mistress. Hozumi never stops loving Asako, but in the wake of an unfortunate incident, his pure love transforms into hatred.
