1895. End of the Joseon dynasty. Japanese assassins infiltrate the palace and brutally murder the Empress. Discovering the plot, a young man named Kim Chang-soo (Cho Jin-Woong) beats an armed Japanese assassin to death. Bowing to pressure from the Japanese, the Korean government sentences him to death. But Kim Chang-soo will not so easily be eliminated. Vowing to maintain his honor and that of his people, the young Kim begins to teach his fellow prisoners how to read and write.
