Before becoming the lead singer of The Doors, Jim Morrison studied at the film school of the University of California in Los Angeles. In 1964, he made his only surviving short film: First Love. His roommate at the time, who helped him out when he threatened to become homeless, still has the obscure footage in his possession. This poet and photographer leads us round his studio while talking about his former friendship with Morrison, about the day they plunged into a swimming pool in Bel Air (‘the last innocent day of our lives’) and about the love of his life, Liz, whom he eventually lost. At the end of Obscura, First Love is shown entirely: Morrison’s preoccupation with voyeurism that manifested itself later in his lyrics is already distinctly present in this early document. With music by The Incredible String Band and Eric Matthews from Sub-Pop. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
