Takács, an unemployed man, lives in a country village with his pregnant wife and young daughter. As they are building a house, they are head-over-heels in debt. Like almost everybody else in the village community, they owe money to the public utility works and keep hiding away from the bill collector. Takács tries his best, he works unregistered, while his unemployment entitlement is about to run out. The Coca Cola Company is looking for a lorry driver with a vehicle. Takács, at the cost of selling their very last valuables and with the help of his friend, make a vehicle operational with stolen parts, in order to become eligible for the job. Yet a battery can only be obtained by stealing the one in the light-gate at the railway crossing. On his first day at work, in the cafeteria, he learns from the television news reel that by their village the light gate at the railway crossing had been out of order, and in the consequent mass accident his own daughter also died.
