Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere

Living their destitute lives along the railroad line that cuts asunder a neighbourhood in a poor district of Hanoi, the characters of the film weave their relationships around the situation of constant instability. One of them is Huyen, a good-looking student who gets pregnant from a young loafer. She desperately needs money for abortion and is forced to prostitution in order to make it. Luckily, she meets a high-society customer who is obsessed by pregnant women. The situation becomes even more complicated after the man makes Huyen so happy that she practically forgets about a baby growing inside her. The first feature film by a 32-year-old independent filmmaker is a profound and precise portrayal of her country's society, ruthlessly exposing social conditions with particular reference to sexual exploitation as well as the consequences of choices made by individuals trapped in their solitude.
