Belgica is the story of two brothers: charismatic and temperamental Frank - a husband, father, and an incurable womanizer - and his ambitious-but-green, one-eyed younger brother Jo, who owns a dive bar called Belgica. When Frank helps Belgica become the place to be for great music, beautiful people, and debauched fun, the brothers become business partners to expand the bar. Belgica quickly becomes bigger and better, and the brothers seem to have discovered the formula for success - until they learn that running a business on this scale is more complicated than they realized, and their relationship and personal lives suffer. englanti 51st KVIFF - it could be radically shortened, which would have helped its cause. The first half, in particular, feels dense at times, but things start to get interesting with the first conflict and the impression improves towards the end. ()

englanti In some things overly schematic and, despite the solid sound mental wax, it doesn't keep its foot on the gas for the whole runtime, but the relationship and character drawing of the two central characters are excellent, and in addition to screaming passages, Van Groeningen is also able to handle quieter moments. Overall a nice hangover. #kviff2016 ()

englanti Recently, there's been another French, although in this case, more Belgian film, focusing on relatively young people, trying to capture a certain atmosphere and indeed a period. And it succeeds in doing so, much like the film Something in the Air, but I simply can't get interested in the characters, nor does the story grab me. ()
