Sex education in Czech schools is one of the most widely discussed topics nationwide. Controversy emerges with the question of whether a course of such nature should be presented in schools. There is little consensus in debates about the specific content of sex education lessons and their possible consequences. Dagmar Smrzova’s satirical documentary focuses on efforts to adapt and incorporate the subject of sex education into the peculiar field of the Czech educational system, rather than on the issue of sex education (or perhaps sex?) itself. The films looks at examples of the practical training of teachers at a primary school in the village of Okrisky, it shows oddities in the teaching methods and illustrates the content of the “subject matter.“ A far more universal theme is also brought to light – the question concerning the level of responsibility of parents and teachers in the upbringing and sexual development of children. What role do they have in a child’s understanding of sex in relation to love and the intellectual experience of romance, and to what extent does the relationship between sexuality and traditional values completely disappear? The film guides the viewer through this sensitive issue in an entertaining way and with a hint of irony. (Academia Film Olomouc)
