The Seagull’s Laughter is a love story. It is a description of a small community in the wake of the second world war. It is also the story of a young girl growing into womanhood but mostly it is a story of a female conspiracy in the days before feminism arrived on the scene. (jakelijan virallinen teksti)

I’d been getting ready for this story for a long time. And when I finally got to it, I realized that there are far too many ladies, mistresses and even girls in this movie. More than what’s healthy. You really can’t fail to notice that. And then I saw the first scene involving a man and it was all pretty clear to me. What we get here is a case of hardcore feminism. You see, the guy is pretty wild, he drinks and on top of that he’s a good-for-nothing bum. I would almost like to know what the director Ágúst Guđmundsson thought of this idea. I mean having watched the movie I expected it was made by a woman. Other than that, you can expect a proper 1950s atmosphere and the fact that not much has changed in Iceland in the sixty years. ()
