This less-known but important contribution to urban planning was made for New York City. William H. Whyte, an American urban planner and sociologist, and his team filmed directly in the streets, and on the basis of the obtained material carried out an analysis of people's behaviour. They trained their cameras on 17 locations, such as squares, large open spaces or fountains and they observed and recorded human activity there over a long period of time. It turned out that certain places were far from utilising their potential and had lost "human scale" in their deliberate opulence. Other places, in contrast, tended to attract more attention and the urban planners attempt to explain why. As far as the film is concerned, this is not only a mere statistical enumeration. Quite the contrary, as it comments in a humorous way on both the typical and non -traditional behaviour of people in the streets, and at the same time, explores the possibilities and utilization of these places depending on various factors. Due to its age, the film is not preserved in the finest quality. (Academia Film Olomouc)
