Rumour has it that a Chinese railroad worker has escaped with gold to a remote ranch in the sierras of Northern California. Drifters Saul and Bill conceive a plan to get their hands on it. Working as a ranch hand Saul intends to gain the trust of Zhen and his beautiful wife Kun Hua. When the time is right Bill plans to strike. However, in this postwar period following the 1849 Gold Rush word is out and when a group of even worse men arrive seeking the fortune a deadly game commences replete with broken promises, betrayals and shifting allegiances.
