One of today’s most distinctive experimental filmmakers works with Humphrey Jennings’s 1943 The Silent Village, in which the inhabitants of a British mining village played the part of the people from the Czech village of Lidice, which was exterminated and burnt to the ground by the German occupiers during the Protectorate. The director edits the scene of the arriving Nazi soldiers and repeatedly uses it with a different audio track: sound as a tool for social control and repetition as the spectre of historical memory.
