Beth and Francis, a young married couple, are on holiday together when they venture to a beautiful, but highly remote, island. Beth is pregnant and the two are hoping to enjoy their last vacation before their baby is born. When they arrive, they notice that while there are plenty of children present, the adults all seem to be missing. Initially attributing this to the after effects of a recent festival, they quickly realize something far more sinister is afoot. Come Out and Play it’s not that bad and it doesn’t stomp very much on the heritage of the original from Spain, but I don’t see any reason for this remake; it’s awfully pointless. Who Can Kill a Child? is not a film with special effects that would look aged today, and Makinov doesn’t bring in anything innovative, so there’s zero originality. The unsettling atmosphere of the sunny island of murderous kids that made the original famous is well recreated here and there, but it never captures the intensity of the terror. I’m giving it three stars, though it’s still a candidate for the most pointless horror film of the year.
