Elokuvassa HOBITTI – VIIDEN ARMEIJAN TAISTELU Bilbo Reppulin, Thorin Tammikilven ja kääpiöretkikunnan seikkailut päättyvät. Kun kääpiöt vapauttavat kotimaansa lohikäärme Smaugin kynsistä, he päästävät samalla tietämättään valloilleen hirveän tuhovoiman. Hurjistunut Smaug kohdistaa palavan raivonsa Järvikaupungin puolustuskyvyttömiin miehiin, naisiin ja lapsiin. Takaisin saatua aarretta kuin riivattuna varjeleva Thorin uhraa ystävyyden ja kunnian aarteen puolesta, ja Bilbon kuumeiset yritykset puhua hänelle järkeä ajavat hobitin tekemään epätoivoisen ja vaarallisen valinnan. Edessä on kuitenkin vielä suurempia vaaroja. Velho Gandalfia lukuun ottamatta kukaan ei ole aavistanut, että mahtava vihollinen Sauron on lähettänyt matkaan suuren örkkiarmeijan, joka aikoo hyökätä yllättäen Yksinäiselle vuorelle. Pimeyden voimat kerääntyvät ja yhteenotto lähestyy – kääpiöiden, haltioiden ja ihmisten tulee päättää, yhdistävätkö he voimansa vai kohtaavatko he tuhon. Bilbo huomaa joutuvansa taistelemaan sekä itsensä että ystäviensä puolesta sankarillisessa Viiden armeijan taistelussa, jossa pelissä on koko Keski-Maan tulevaisuus. (SF Film Fin.)
